LUMI: A Contemporary Residential Building Inspired by Nature

Creating a Vertical Villa with a Dialogue of Lights and Shadows

The LUMI project, designed by Alberto Torres Antônio Zago of Torres Arquitetos and Antonio Zago Arquitetura, is a residential building that draws inspiration from the park trees across the street. This unique design seeks to establish a constant game of lights and shadows, creating a clean and contemporary architecture that harmonizes with its surroundings.

The LUMI residential building stands out with its horizontal plans that define the structure's floors. These plans alternate in different sizes and shapes, forming social spaces that provide a sense of continuity between the interior and exterior. This innovative design approach generates a vertical villa with all its peculiarities, offering residents a truly unique living experience.

One of the standout features of the LUMI design is the use of the horizontal plans as brise-soleils, shading the facade. This not only adds an aesthetic element to the building but also enhances its energy efficiency by reducing direct sunlight and heat gain. The incorporation of these shading elements demonstrates the designer's commitment to both form and function.

The LUMI residential building boasts 15 floors and a total of 26 apartments, each ranging in size from 218.00m to 360.00m. The project was realized using conventional technology, materials, and manpower, with a focus on valuing local production and craftsmanship.

Residents of LUMI enjoy a unique interaction with the design. The horizontal plans create social spaces that seamlessly connect the interior and exterior, transforming rooms into fluid spaces that open up to the surrounding landscape. The large and transparent terraces surrounding the building's two main faces provide residents with the feeling of living in a house, while the wide windows ensure ample natural light and stunning views of the park.

The LUMI project, located in Porto Alegre, Brazil, was completed in 2018. The design process involved extensive market research to identify potential residents who value both design and a close relationship with nature. The biggest challenge faced during the project was to create a direct relationship between the construction and the environment, valuing both aspects equally.

LUMI's innovative design and commitment to integrating nature into urban living have been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
